Basic Art Journaling Class Ages 10+

Ten 1.5 hour sessions $150

Wednesdays Sept 12, 19, 26,  Oct 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov 7, 14, 21

See some examples of art journals. Learn some basic techniques for creating pages in an art journal. Explore your personal artistic voice. This is a hands-on studio class. Wear something that you don’t mind getting dirty and possibly permanently stained, or bring an apron or smock. Parents may drop off students.

Supplies to be provided by the student:

A blank art journal at least 9×12″. Heavy weight mixed media or watercolor paper is best. Can be purchased at an art supply store. Must be brought to each class!

Supplies to be provided by the instructor:

Acrylic and Watercolor Paint and brushes

Pencils

Pens

Markers

Stamps and ink

Collage paper

Glue, mod podge and gel medium

Stencils

Drawing tools

Rub-on decals

Embellishments

This is always a really fun class! We will spend some time each session writing in our journals.

 

Winter Nature Journaling Age 5+

Four 1.5 hour sessions $80

December 5, 12, 19, 26

This course will bring the wonders of nature indoors. Our four sessions will cover seashells, rocks and minerals, vegetables and fruits, and flowers.  We will sketch in our nature journals based on our observations. We will learn to use pencils, pens, pastels and watercolor paints. Parents may drop off students.

Supplies needed: multimedia art journal optional: magnifying glass

I require a minimum of three students to run a class. Please be aware that if you register in advance, I may have to cancel the class if I can’t reach the three student minimum. If you have paid in advance and I have to cancel, I will refund your tuition. I consider other refunds on a case by case basis.

I am happy to work with your group to design a class or one-time workshop that fits your needs. I’m comfortable teaching kids of all ages and adults. Life Skills Sewing Age 8+

Two 2-hour sessions. $40

“Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without.” Our grandparents’ generation knew this lesson but we have lost it due to cheaply made products with built-in obsolescence. Stop throwing away useful items. Learn to mend your damaged items and extend their life. This class is not intended as a tailoring or alterations course. Students should bring 1-5 items that need repair. Can be a garment, tote bag, stuffed animal, etc. Instructor will provide supplies. Adult companions are welcome to join the class, but they must pay the tuition fee as well.

Nature Journaling-Intermediate Age 7+

Four two-hour sessions $60

This course is a series of field trips to parks and gardens in the greater Washington DC area. We will take short walks to closely observe various natural environments. We will sketch in our nature journals based on our observations. We will look at examples of scientific botanical and zoological drawings. We will learn to use pencils, charcoal, pens, and watercolor paints. We will plan to be outdoors even on bad weather days, but we will be making art under shelter. Adult must remain in the park during the entire class. This is not a drop off class.

Supplies needed: multimedia art journal optional: magnifying glass, digital camera

Class limited to ten students per session.

locations TBA but may include places such as Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, National Arboretum, Watkins Regional Park, Patuxent Wildlife Research Refuge.  I try to choose free or low-cost locations whenever possible.

Simple applique Age 8+ $60

Offered in 4 two-hour sessions.

Learn scissors and iron safety; Learn to thread a needle; Learn to tie a knot in your thread;

Choose your own fabrics; Learn to prepare you background and applique shapes;

Learn to pin and thread baste; Learn to make the hand applique stitch;

Learn to make a buttonhole embroidery stitch. Class limited to six students per session.

What is a quilt? Age 8+ $75

Offered in 4 two-hour sessions.

Learn scissors, rotary cutter and iron safety

Make a small quilt suitable for a doll or pet bed, or a wall hanging.

Learn to piece by hand or machine.

Learn to cut with a template and scissors.

Learn to cut safely with a rotary cutter and ruler.

Learn to about tying a quilt, hand and machine quilting.

Learn how to square up and trim your blocks.

Learn how to pin and thread baste your quilt sandwich.

Learn how to make a pillowcase finish.

Class limited to six students per session

Long Term Teaching

I occasionally teach semester-long courses in fine art techniques, fine art survey, music appreciation, and sewing to homeschool groups in a Co-op or Tutorial setting.  I prefer a drive no longer than 45 minutes from my home in Bowie, MD. Please contact me for more information.

I occasionally accept commissions to make custom quilted items for clients.

I do not do T-shirt or pajama quilts but am happy to refer you to friends who do a beautiful job at a reasonable price
