Handmaid Harriet-Free Pattern

Have you been watching the new tv series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale? I read the novel 20-some-odd years ago, but the nightmarish possibilities held within seem closer to reality nowadays.

I decided to make a quilt inspired by Offred and her friends. It’s a riff on a classic Sunbonnet Sue quilt pattern. I imagine the wives of Gilead enjoy making this quilt.

I made the handmaid’s walk in sets of two, because in the novel, they are always in pairs. They police each other, in theory.

I knew the words “Nolite te bastardes carborundum” needed to be a part of this quilt as well. I hand-carved my own stamp. I wanted the words to look like they’d been scratched into the wall, just like Offred’s predecessor had left her secret message on her closet wall.

Here’s a small one-block wall hanging version.
